Travelling with your pet: documents, safety and paw-friendly destinations

A holiday with your pet starts weeks before departure. Check that microchip and health booklet are in order and, for trips abroad, look into the EU pet passport and rabies vaccination: some countries require precise waiting times.

In the car a carrier or approved harness is not optional: beyond the fines, a loose dog in the cabin is a danger to everyone. Plan stops every two hours, with fresh water and a short walk, and NEVER leave an animal in a car in the sun.

On trains small dogs travel in a carrier, larger ones with their own ticket, muzzle at hand and a short leash. For flights, check the airline's policy early: cabin spots for pets are limited and go fast.
